Johnson Automatics Model of 1941 semi-automatic rifle
Caliber is 30-06. Rotary magazine holds 10 rounds
Johnson Automatics serialized many internal parts for this model. The parts were installed without regard to matching the serialized parts to the serialized receiver. I located a build sheet for this serial number that shows the serial numbers on each part used when the gun was manufactured. Most parts are in fact original to the gun. The non matching parts are the barrel, the firing pin and the extractor which are all parts that would have been replaced during the service life of the gun.
The stock appears to be original finish. The metal parts appear to be original finish. The muzzle end of the barrel gauges around 10% of service life left. The gun appears to have a lot of use during WWII. It seems to have shipped to the NPC from Johnson on 1/7/1942. It does have the acceptance star stamped above the manufacturers mark on the receiver.
The USMC and S/N stamped on the buttstock appear to be a very early stamping judging from the scratch marks and finish. The markings have been disputed by the experts online as no other marked rifle has been found. I think that is a difficult call when looking at pictures versus handling the gun.
All in all it is a very nice rifle that does not appear to have been tampered with. A true piece of history and a very rare gun.
The gentleman that is selling his collection was very organized. He had several military rifles that have already been sold. The white tag with the number 12 on it designated his number for the rifle. There is also a reproduction bayonet and scabbard that goes with this rifle as well as a very nice Hoyt leather sling dated 1918.
He purchased this rifle 22 years ago. It came out of NY. That is all of the actual history I have been able to get from him.
The Yugo model 48 I have listed is from this collection. The Yugo model 48A is not.
